MathMagic M and M's

Mrs. Keaton, our awesome fifth grade math teacher has a special unit she teaches every year during testing. She gives each student a bag of M and M's and has them identify the number of each color and the number of M and M's in each bag. She uses this to teach ratio, percentage, and graphing. Here are some students giving their reflections on the assignment.

If you would like more information about this unit or even like a copy of it send an email or leave a comment and I will be happy to have Mrs. Keaton contact you.

Here is the link to the rest of the students' reflections about the project.

I haven't had time to listen to watch your videos yet, but I will. What a wonderful idea. I should have my college students make a video explaining what they learned. Do you think they would like to do that? You might be surprised when I tell you that they probably would not. I will find out tonight and tell you!

Wow! I listened to one video! You understand data and graphing and all of that? I gave my students a short math test at the beginning of the semester. One third got this question wrong: If you multiply 7 times 12, what is the product? And they are in college and hoping to be teachers! How many of you can get the right answer. Ask Mr. C to let me know. And good luck with your math. I am impressed!

@WinetimeJS You will be happy to know that all 21 students in my room had the right answer when I asked them.

Great job everyone! I think you did a great job reflecting on how you liked the m&m project! I would have commented on each of you personally, but you didn't list your names! My name is Lizzie from Missoula, MT. I visit your blog a lot!

@Lizzie, I apologize for not naming the students. Thanks for coming and leaving a comment. Mrs. Keaton, our math teacher told me today she wished someone would comment on this post and now we have two. Thanks again.

I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the math videos. I am going to be sharing the idea of blogging with all the teachers in my school in the next few weeks and I thought my math teachers would be my hardest "sell" but I see where you can easily incorporate math and technology. Thank you for giving me examples to show them.
