Investigate 1 Mixture and Solutions: Can We Separate a Mixture?

Yesterday we conducted an experiment where where we created a mixture of salt, diatomaceous earth, gravel, and water. Then we used filters to see if we could separate the mixture. We had planned on recording the lesson, but Ustream died on us halfway through.
Write a post on one thing you learned from the experiment.

Here are some links you can leave a comment on when you are through.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid. When you try to separate a solid from a liquid it doesn't cause very much. This experiment was cool because you got to see how to separate a solid from a liquid.

I learned that if you mixed mixtures you could separate them.Like if you use a mixture of salt, diatomaceous earth, gravel, and water you could separate them by using a filter.Just like uor experiment.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid. And when you do it you have to use a filter or something like a filter.

I learn that you can separate liquid from solid things.

I learned that you can separate mixtures by a screen filter.(Emily)
I learned that you can also use a coffee filter to separate a solid from a liquid !!!(Mackenzie)

I leaned that coffee filters separate better than screens.the coffee filter separated the salt and diatomaceous earth from the water, and the screen only separated the rocks from the mixture.

I learned that you can use a filter to take out rocks but you can not use a filter to take out stuff that is like salt.

I learned that we could separate a solid from a liquid.I learn that the net would only get the gravel not the diatomaceous earth and salt.I learned that the filter can get the water and diatomaceous earth and salt separated.

What I learned is that we can separate a solid from a liquid. The first thing we did is get water in a cup and pour diatomaceous earth, gravel, and cc scoops of salt and we mix it to get a mixtures.

I learned that we can separate a solid from a liquid. If you use salt, diatomaceous earth, gravel, water with a filter you can see what stuff was in it after you did the project.

Yesterday we did an experiment on separating materials. I learned you can do many things to separate materials. You can use filters to let the water run out ,or you can use evaporating trays to let the water evaporate ,and much more. Either way it works.

I learned that you can separate a mixture from a liquid by using a filter, a coffee filter, and a funnel.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid by using a screen. The only thing that might stay on top will be a solid. And when your finished you have a mixture.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid by putting it in a filter. This experiment was very fun because you actually got to do use your hands to do the experiment.

WE can separate a liquid from a solid. In the science class we tried to mixed mixtures and then separate them.I enjoyed the experiment in science.

I learned that you can separate liquid form a solid by things.

I learned that A solution is a mixture with a bunch of materials mixed and then separate it with a filter.

I learned that you can separate
anything that is together like
solid and liquid.

I learned how to separate a solid from a liquid by using water, gravel, diatomaceous earth, salt, screen filter, coffee filter, 5cc spoon, wooden stick, 2 cups, funnel, evaporating dish, and an evaporating tray.

I learned that you can separate the gravel with the net and you can separate the flour and sugar from the water.I also learned that you can't separate the sugar and the flour.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid. This experiment was awesome because you got to see how to separate a solid from a liquid.

I learned that you can separate a mixture of salt, gravel, water, and diatomaceous earth by using a coffee filter and a screen.

I have learned how to separate a solid from a liquid. I have also learned that the filter only separates the gravel from the diatomaccous earth and also the salt. And also the funnel with the filter in it separated the diatomaccous earth, salt from the water and, only the water was dripping.

I learned that you can separate a sold from a liquid by a coffee filter and it was kinda cool.

I learned that it is easier and faster to use a screen then a filter. Also when you use a screen the Solids stay at the top and the liquids go to the cup at the bottom.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid and you can separate diatomaceous earth, gravel, and water and salt and you have to use tools like a screen, coffee filter,5cc spoon, wooden stick,3cups,funnel,evaporation tray, evaporation dish.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a solid. If you don't fold the coffee filter right it will be the same.

I learned that you could mix ingredients and separate them to a clear liquid again.

I learned that you can separate a liquid from a solid. When the water went into the cup after it was already mixed up with the diatomaceous earth which is the solid it means you can separate a liquid from a solid.

I have learned how to separate a solid from a liquid. And also how the funnel with the coffee filter separates the gravel from the diatomaceous earth and also the salt. Our experiment was very fun!!!!!!!

I laernd how to separate a solid from a liquid and ho to make the water clear when it was dark

What I learned was how I could have a mixture that would lead to a solution of how I could separate the mixture ,also is how to make a mixture.

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid. You can take a filter to separate anything that is as big as a rock or bigger than a rock. This experiment was cool and fun because we got to learn a lot of new things.

I learned what you get when you put disharmonious earth and salt together you get a plaque like solution.

I learned that you can use different filters to separate a solid from a liquid. I think the coffee filter worked best for trying to separate the diaotomaceous earth and salt.

I learned that you can separate a mixture by using a certain filter like a coffee filter or a screen.

I learned that when diatomaceaus earth, salt, and water they form a thick and tough mixture.

I learned that you can separate mixtures like.Salt, diatomaceous, earth gravel, water, by using a filter.Just like your experiment.

I learned you can separate any liquid from a solid.By using a filter you can separate gravel, diatomaceous earth. And you can separate the salt by evaporating it.

sergio said...

I learned that you can separate a solid from a liquid.the rocks got stuck in the screen filter and the diatomaceous earth got stuck in the coffee filter.

I learned how to separate a solid from a liquid by using a filter. You can use a filter to separate a solid from a liquid because a liquid can get past a filter and a solid cant.

I learned that if you put the mixtures in a cup and filter it with a coffee filter the water would come out clear.

I learn that you can mix up all things and they can be all kinds of experiments.

I have learned hat you can separate Gravel,Salt,& Diatomaceaus earth with three simple filters. The filters are a Screen filter,a Coffee Filter with a funnel,& a Evaporating tray.

Gavin said...

What I learned is you can separate a solid from a liquid by putting a screen filter or coffee filter.

Nathan said...

I learned that it is pretty easy to separate a mixture. In my opinion the diatomaceous earth was the hardest to separate. The salt was the one that took the longest to separate.

Smantie said...

I learned that a filter will make the water will be clear.
