Samorost

Samorost 1 is a crazy cool game. The idea is to get the character, Samorost, to explore the space ship that he finds flying towards his planet. To play this game you simply point and click until you find out how to progress. You will have to collaborate on this one, don't be selfish when you figure out the puzzles!

Colonial Williamsburg Website

Colonial Williamsburg is an incredible living history project. Here is a link to the history of present day Williamsburg. This city holds an incredibly important space in our country's history. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, and James Madison spent considerable amounts of time there.
The Kids Zone has a lot of games and activities related to the city and the Colonial Revolution time period. I want you to explore the site and leave a comment about which of these games and activities would be most beneficial to do in a history class that was teaching this time period. Which ones give you a "feel" for the time period? Which ones could be skipped?

If you are as old as I am, you remember playing this game on the school's old computers (Apple II's or maybe Commodore 64's). If you don't remember, or simply aren't old enough then take a few minutes to play through an early 'video' game that kids used to love.

World Geography Games

World Geography Games is a website that uses maps to gameify learning places. It is a pretty basic site and it focuses specifically on factual knowledge but if you like learning geography you might like to play this.

Free Rice

 FreeRice.com is a quiz site and a way to help the World Food Programme end hunger. For every answer you get right, ten grains of rice will be donated. While this may not seem like a lot of rice, it adds up. An added feature is that you can now pick from several different categories of questions.

Bridge Building Game

A couple students caught me playing X Construct on my phone during lunch today and wanted to play themselves. I told them I would find a PC equivalent so they could try it out on their own. Here is one I found called Bridge Building Game. The purpose of the game is to construct a bridge that will allow the lemming like pink dinosaurs to cross safely across a chasm.

Interested in Natural Science? Check Out These Games

The first game is Blue Whale on the National Geographic website. The idea is to find and tag blue whales so that they can be studied by scientists. Warning, it is really hard to tag the whales!

The second game is Move which is also on the National Geographic website. Here you lead a migrating herd of animals and try to keep them alive. You have to contend with predators as well as lack of food. 

The third game is from the Discovery Channel, Thrill of the Catch. This is a fishing simulation that also allows you to create and name your own fish. As you  catch more fish, you are rewarded with better boats.

A Digital Christmas Gift to You: Nintendo8.com and 8Bit Christmas Music

Nintendo8.com is an old school gamer's dream, it hosts emulations of some of the best early console games of my generation including the Sega Master System, the original 8-bit Nintendo, and even some Commodore 64 games. If you have never experienced these early games, I would suggest you take a look and appreciate the evolution of gaming. This will make you appreciate your now generation consoles!

We are working on identifying parts of speech. We have been identifying them in the context of sentences, but some testing requires students to identify parts of speech from a list such as multiple choice questions. Here is a website that we can use to drill on parts of speech in that context. Here is the link.

The site also has all sorts of math and science games as well. Here is a link to the home page.

While sites like this should not replace other ways of teaching these concepts, they still have a place for students to have a little fun while reviewing or being introduced to the concepts.

Free Rice Revisited

Free Rice, the website that uses vocabulary to donate rice now has subjects that can be chosen that make the site even better to use. Below are the different categories that can be selected. The picture above shows the Famous Paintings category where you have to identify the artist of the art. Obviously, this really expands the usefulness of this site for education purposes.
