Victorian Slum House is a reality show created by the British Broadcasting Company in 2016 to show how people lived in a slum in London during the time from 1860-1900. 

As we continue to migrate from South America to Europe we can learn a little about England here as well as review a few lessons from the social-emotional learning we have been learning in the mornings. 

As you watch this show think about life during this time. How does it compare to your life today? In what ways is your life better? In what ways is it not as good?

Do You Know the 50 States?

 It is rare that you get a real life example of why learning something in class is worthwhile. This isn't the only, or even best reason, to learn where countries are, but it might keep you from being embarrassed as an adult.

If you are unfamiliar, Geography Now is a great resource to learn facts about countries. Unfortunately there is no video on the United States yet, they are working alphabetically down the list, we are lucky a video was created on the 50 states. We will watch this about mid-way through today's lesson. 

 

The first activity will be for you to label a paper map of the 50 states. Afterwards play the game below and see how well you do. Let me know what your first score is so I can record it.

Making a World Map

 

In this lesson you will take a quick pre-assessment to see how many continents and oceans you remember. Then you will hand draw the continents and label them and the oceans. You will finish up by coloring them.

Southern Europe Activities

Write a story where a Roman god visits you. Use the story to explain who the god is, what he or she is responsible for, and what he or she looks like. (250 words) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Roman_gods

Compare and contrast five Greek and Roman gods who are the same, but might have different characteristics. There is a comparison table at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Similarities_between_Roman,_Greek_and_Etruscan_mythologies but to find their differences will require more research.

Kiva in the Classroom

A few years ago I created a Kiva group for my students to make micro loans. We ended up loaning out $100 that year. Today we are going to start lending again.

The students will be using the website Dollar Street to examine the homes and lives of disparate people living all around the world. From that information we will choose a country to target for our micro loan. We will then go to Kiva and look for someone we want to invest in and we will make the loan.

1) Draw and label Kazakhstan, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emigrates, Oman, Qatar, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. (p. 404)

2) Label the capitol cities for each country. (p. 404)

3) Label Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf. (p. 404)

4) Identify on the map the major resources for southwest and central Asia. Draw the oil pipelines but not the shipping lanes. (p. 405) 

5) Color the countries and the bodies of water.

We will be watching these videos this week as we work on our maps of the eastern Mediterranean region.

Norway: You Make the Test!

After Monday's assignment, I thought you might like to create your own lesson on Norway, complete with creating your own test using Google Forms. (Even if you won't like it, you are going to do it anyway :P)

Watch this video first!

This video will give you the basics on how to create a Google Form. You can watch it and refer back to it as necessary. If you get stuck, ask someone sitting next to you. If they can't figure it out, let me know and I will help. 

Create your Google Form. 

You need to title it with the name of the country Norway. Next share the form with me. Pay attention, I may leave you comments as you work!
