Passage to Freedom A Study of Character

Passage to Freedom is a biography of Chiune Sugihara. In the story Mr. Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat to Lithuania, signs thousands of travel visas for refugees escaping from the German army in 1940. The picture above is an actual visa signed by Mr. Sugihara.

Mr. Sugihara's efforts reveal to us three of his character traits: compassion, courage, and integrity. Give an example from the story to show one of these traits.

The Commenting Tiger Award goes to Michael for his excellent comment using details from the story. Congratulations

He was very kind because even though
his government told him he couldn't give a visa to all of the people. He did it anyway.Thats how he showed compassion, courage and integrity

Mr.sugihara said "I have to do something.I may have to disobey my government, but if I don't,I will be disobeying my conscience"that is courage.

Mr.Sugihara had lots of courage. Because he had to make the decision whether or not to disobey his own government or to save tons of refugees.

He showed courage by righting all of those visas cause the government said no and then Mr.Sugihara asked the government and he said no again so it took him a lot of courage to do something that the government said not to do because the government is the like a boss to the people that lived in japan.

He showed courage in the story by disobeying his government. To give visa's to the refugees for them to travel east through the Soviet Union and end up in japan.
