Mail and Guardian- South Africa

The Mail and Guardian is a news site from South Africa. I see a lot of similarities between this site and typical sites in the United States (not just because of the online dating ads ;). Does this site "feel" different from the BBC site or Al Jazeera?

After checking out the site, take a look at this post from Al Jazeera, US Beggar's Priceless Gift. Then look at articles on this story on the BBC site, CNN, or FoxNews. Did any other story use the word "beggar"? Does this word seem offensive to you? Why do you think Al Jazeera used the word in the headline?  BTW, I didn't find an article about this story on the Mail and Guardian.

I dont think the term "beggar is offensive mainly because he begs for money. Thats the term for people who beg for money. Beggar.

The use of the word 'beggar' did not offend me because they could have used much worse terms and it is used in many stories we read in our communication arts class.

I do not think that the term 'beggar' if offensive because they could have called him other names that are more offensive. But that's just how I see it.

i don't find it offensive because they might have seen this man as begging to get a job.so that might be why they called him a beggar because they thought he might have been begging for a job.

No other story used the word beggar it used homeless mans golden voice. I think it is a little offensive.I think homeless is a better used word to describe the man. Maybe because they had no homeless people in their country or their language was so diverse that they called him a beggar. Also they could have been jealous cause he's been in so much trouble and had bad , terrible things happen to him and done horrible things but yet he's getting job requests and his life is becoming a lot better even though he's done so many bad and horrible things.

I didn't see another story that use the word beggar. This word does but then it doesn't seem offensive to me. I think that Al Jazeera use the word in the headline because it might caught peoples eyes because of it.

I don't think any of the other story used the word beggar. Yes this word seems offensive to me, its kind insulting to who ever they say it to. I think Al Jazeera used the word beggar because he was out on the street asking or begging for money or a second chance.

The word beggar offends me in a way. Because come on if you were homeless you would want people to give you money so you could eat or something like that. But they could have put worse words than that.

Well I think that the word beggar is kind of offensive I mean I know they ask for money and stuff but, they have to in order to eat. I think that they should just use a more nicer word instead of (beggar) for example (homeless person) I think that someone would put the word beggar as there headline because that's like what there talking about and, again they should use the world homeless person or something like that:)

Well it is offensive for me cause there's people that was like everyone being able to have money. But it's dumb because the government is fire cause there aliens and its not there fault. Cause there different then everyone else and these kids that say "it wont offend me". Bull it would offend you if you were in that position. But they never had it's dumb and they don't beg for money they ask for money.

No other story used the word beggar in it besides Al Jazeera. The word beggar means to request a donation in a supplicating manner. It did bother me when he used the word beggar because the man is trying to stay alive and if he has to beg for food then fine that in how he stays alive.I think that he was the only one that used the work because he dosent understand what it means to be a beggar.

ThE term begged is not that offensive as callin someone a hobo that would offend me more than begger.

The others do not use the word begger they call it the golden voice .I do find it offensive because the man has a gift he is using it for money not to make people feel bad or good .And I think they us the word "BEGGER" because they might think he forged the tape. But thats Just me.
